Springtime Car Care Tips

Springtime Car Care Tips
Although it hasn’t felt like it lately, springtime is here.Just like you winterize your car, you can “springerize”your car. During the winter your car takes a hefty beating and needs checkups that are difficult to do in the cold of winter to detect problems that changing temperatures may make worse.
Check Your Tires
When you cool most matter the atoms slow and become compacted and solid. When matter is heated the atoms expand and move more quickly. The air in your tires is no different. It becomes compressed in cold weather meaning that you need more air to reach the same pressure. In warm weather you need significantly less. As the temperature begins to rise you’ll find that your tire pressure will steadily rise. With this increase in pressure the balance of your tires may change as well. At the beginning of spring make sure that your tires are properly balanced and monitor them closely during the first week or so to make sure that the tire pressure is continually correct.
When you’re monitoring your tire pressure it’s important to remember that the tire pressure recommended for your car is usually found on the inside of your car’s driver side door, not on the tire itself. Also remember that “cold tire pressure” does not refer to cold temperature tire pressure but the pressure it should be at when your car has been stationary for a while (just like you check your oil after it has been off for a while).
Belts and Hoses
During winter, your rubber hoses and belts will tend to become stiff. Frequent changes in temperature from near zero to possibly above 100 can wreak havoc on malleable, temperature sensitive materials like rubber. This can cause them to crack and leak, ruining your car during the summertime. The best practice is to keep an eye on your belts and your hoses. Generally your hoses will be off of your radiator, which is usually toward the front of your car. Your car’s belts are usually just off the engine block. You don’t have to remove them or even touch them. Simply look for cracks or wear and change them if necessary.
Windshield Wipers
In the wintertime, unless you’re one of the few that puts their windshield wipers up before snow comes, your wipers will likely freeze to your windshield at some point. That, in addition to the constant wear and tear of use during winter snowstorms can cause your wipers, just like your hoses and belts, to crack and become problematic. We don’t have to tell you what a problem bad wipers are during a spring shower. Simply pull your wipers up and look at the rubber, making sure that they are not only in tact and not cracked, but still malleable and not stiff.
Suspension and Alignment
During the winter water will collect in cracks, wearing down the road, and expanding the cracks into big problems such as potholes. These potholes are going to be a nightmare for your suspension and alignment. The easiest way to check the integrity of your suspension and alignment is to simply TO STOP BY BAY DIAGNOSTIC for any springtime preparations on your BMW, MINI COOPER, PORSCHE, LAND ROVER, AUDI, MERCEDES BENZ, V/W,or SMART CAR

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CV JOINT FAILURE

A common failure point on newer cars is broken CV joint boots. The CV boots are especially prone to failure in tight urban areas where constant turning and parking maneuvers are required.

javascript:popImage('tech/images/tech/maint/artic/cv_joint_failure/largepics/techphoto_cvjoint1.JPG','CV Joint Failure') javascript:popImage('tech/images/tech/maint/artic/cv_joint_failure/largepics/techphoto_cvjoint2.JPG','CV Joint Failure')

You might be asking what the heck are CV boots? The transmission of your car is connected to the wheels via a set of axle shafts. These shafts have (CV, Constant Velocity) joints on the inner and outer portions of the shafts. These joints allow the shaft and wheels to move and turn independently of each other. The CV joints must remain lubricated in order to move freely. The lubricant for the joint is grease, and this grease is contained within a rubber accordion-style boot. The boot is in constant motion, expanding and contracting, while the wheels are being steered. This constant motion leads to eventual failure of the boot.

You can notice the grease has splattered all over the inside of the
wheel and all over the suspension components.
http://www.tyrolsport.com/index.php?p=page&page_id=maintenance_tech&pg=techartic-cvjointfailure#top
This is usually a giveaway to a broken CV boot, as there are no other signs of failure. (see left)

javascript:popImage('tech/images/tech/maint/artic/cv_joint_failure/largepics/techphoto_cvjoint9.JPG','CV Joint Failure') javascript:popImage('tech/images/tech/maint/artic/cv_joint_failure/largepics/techphoto_cvjoint10.JPG','CV Joint Failure')
Above are some pictures of Outer CV boot failures
http://www.tyrolsport.com/index.php?p=page&page_id=maintenance_tech&pg=techartic-cvjointfailure#top
As stated earlier, there are no warning signs when a CV boot breaks. The car will continue to drive normally for a period of time. Replacing the CV boot at this point will be an economical repair. However, if left unrepaired, a clicking noise will begin to develop during tight turns. Once this noise appears, the CV joint has gone without lubricant for too long, and is permanently damaged. The simple, economical CV boot repair has now become an expensive CV joint replacement. Have a shop inspect the CV boots any time the car is on the lift, as it only takes minutes, and can prevent expensive repairs in the future. Insider Tip: Many shops like to replace the complete axle assembly whenever presented with a CV boot or CV joint failure. This is because it is more profitable for the shop to replace the entire axle as a unit as opposed to the boot or joint itself. Be aware that the replacement axles are almost always rebuilt, substandard units. The replacements will have a shorter service life than the original factory components. At Bay Diagnostic, we always use factory quality boots and never replace complete axle assemblies unless absolutely necessary.

Don't Jump to Conclusions..................

This morning I arrived at the shop at about 6:15am to find a BMW 2007 335Xi e90 in our driveway with the owner sitting in the vehicle.

Chatting with the owner of the 335xi, I found out that he was very worried about what the tow truck driver told him.  He was getting a noise and vibration in the car (thinking the worst) and hearing from the tow driver who thought it was a transmission or drive differential assembly.
After our expert European technicians checked the car, low and behold,  it was just a
drive shaft flex joint assembly (see picture).
We ordered the part for Monday .

This is why I keep saying if you own a BMW, MERCEDES BENZ, MINI COOPER, VW, PORSCHE OR AUDI, you must find a shop like
www.baydiagnostic.com to bring your European car to ............

It will save you time, money and stress..........

BRAKE JOB - GOOD, CHEAP OR FAST.......REALLY??

At BAY DIAGNOSTIC not only do we do repairs and service on European cars & SUVs but sometimes we also have to give a reality check to the owners  the that show up at our shop.

After researching and finding us on the web, the owner of this MERCEDES BENZ S 430 showed up at our shop.  She wanted to know if we could diagnose a noise when applying the brakes on this Mercedes Benz.  Our answer was YES.

After road testing the S 430,  YES there was a loud noise when applying the brakes from the rear.  We checked all 4 wheels and saw that new brake pads were installed but the brake rotors were not replaced. When questioned, the vehicle owner acknowledged that the repair center she had visited had told her that the rotors were not in need of replacement. She said that she did not go back to that repair center because if they could not get it right the first time, why go back?

Now for the title-- explaining to her that the only way to answer the complaint was to replace the brake rotors and brake pads (even though they were new) and that there was a cost to doing the brake replacement correctly. Our suggestion was to go back to the shop that did the repair, but she did not want to waste any more time. She gave Bay Diagnostic the OK to do the repair on the rear brakes and she even took advantage of our free delivery service.

This is a photo of the bad brake rotor
